In all my years if cooking, I just learnt something really useful about blenders. When you go to buy a blender, always check for the wattage. The higher the wattage, the more powerfull it is, but it will also be more expensive and consume more electricity.
For normal cooking and everyday tasks, you will need a blender with somewhere between 350 watts and 700 watts. You can push it to 800 watts for a bit more power.
If you want a blender that can make smoothies, crush ice or handle tougher tasks, then you will need one with over 1000 watts. Some blenders can go up to 3000 watts, but those are very expensive, consume alot of electricity, and can burn out regular sockets. For such high powered blenders, you would need to use the type of sockets normally used for air-conditioners.
So, next time you want to buy a blender, don't be too caught up on the brand - focus more on the wattage.
